Questions

Everything people ask before a new roof

How long does a roof last in Erie?

It depends on the material, the slope and how the attic breathes. Asphalt shingles on a north slope that holds snow tire sooner than the same shingles facing south. Slate and cedar can outlast the people who bought the house, if the flashing and fasteners are kept up. We say what we see in your roof, not a number from a chart.

Do you work on slate and cedar roofs?

Yes. A lot of Erie's older blocks still wear slate or cedar, and a repair is often the right call. We tell you when it is, and when the roof has gone too far for one.

What does a written estimate include?

The tear-off and disposal, the deck check, underlayment, ice barrier, drip edge, flashing, ventilation, shingles, ridge caps, cleanup and the permit when your town wants one. What it leaves out is written down too. The Estimates page lists both.

Can you look at the roof before I list the house?

Yes. We can walk the roof and the attic and write a plain description of its condition for a buyer or a seller. It is a written opinion on the day we looked, not a warranty.

Do you work with my insurance?

You decide whether to file a claim, and you deal with your insurer. We inspect the roof, photograph it and write an itemized estimate you can share with them. Your deductible stays yours.

Do you re-roof in winter?

Mostly from spring through fall. Shingles do not seal well in the cold, and a steep roof with ice on it is not a place for a crew. In winter we make roofs safe and dry, then schedule the replacement for when it can be done properly.

How much does a roof cost?

It depends on the roof, so we do not post a price. The Estimates page lists what moves the number and what the written estimate includes. After the visit you get the figure in writing.

Do you tear off the old roof?

Yes, down to the deck. A second layer hides the boards under it and adds weight to old framing.

What if it rains in the middle of a job?

We dry in each section before we leave, with underlayment and ice barrier, so the roof is never left open to the weather.

Do you ask for a deposit?

The terms are in your contract. Pennsylvania law caps the deposit on larger jobs, and the contract states exactly what is due and when.

Who will be on my roof?

Our own crews, led by Josip or a foreman, and a crew lead you can name at the walk-through.

Can I cancel after I sign?

If you sign a contract at your home, you may have three business days to cancel. The contract has the notice.

Still have a question?

Call the office or send a note. A person answers, not a form letter.
